Doctoral Program in Biological and Medical Engineering
Program Description
The Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering (IIBM) is an interdisciplinary academic unit of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC), which belongs simultaneously to the Schools of Engineering, Medicine, and Biological Sciences. The Institute develops research and teaching in four main areas: biomedical imaging, cellular and molecular biology, tissue engineering, quantitative physiology, and biomechanics. In this context, the IIBM created an innovative Doctoral Program, which focuses on interdisciplinarity, internationalization, and entrepreneurship. The Program’s main objective is to train human capital to generate new knowledge and technology at the interface between Engineering, Biology, and Medicine. The Program will also promote the transfer of technology to society through the development of research during the Program and the incorporation of new graduates in academia, industry, or innovative technological ventures.
Accreditation
Program accredited by CNA-Chile for 5 years until 12 December 2028.
Program Objectives
The Program’s main objective is to train human capital to generate new knowledge and technology at the interface between Engineering, Biology, and Medicine. The Program will also contribute to promoting the transfer of technology to society through the development of research during the Program and later the incorporation of new graduate doctors in academia, industry, or innovative technological endeavors.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the Doctoral Program in Biological and Medical Engineering should be able to:
- Make an original and independent contribution in their field of study and identify and develop new research areas with high academic and societal impact.
- Develop and implement solutions to complex problems that require the simultaneous application of interdisciplinary knowledge provided by Engineering, Medicine, and Biology, based on their solid scientific and technological training.
- Promote technology transfer to society through research generated in industry, academia, or technological and innovative ventures.
- Participate in and lead interdisciplinary and international research groups.
- Discuss and defend current research areas with critical and analytical skills and communicate the contributions of their research effectively orally and in writing in English to the scientific community and society as a whole.
- Develop research and professional work in the interdisciplinary field of Biological and Medical Engineering and its interaction with society and the environment with ethical responsibility.

Applicants must have a university degree or bachelor’s degree in areas related to Biological Sciences, Medicine or Engineering, and have an international certification of English level (ALTE 3 or B2) (*). They should also show a strong interest in the intersection between these disciplines. Applicants must fill out an application form at the following link and download the fee waiver form. Additionally, they must send the required documentation to postgrado.iibm@uc.c Previous conversations with the professors of the program will be strongly valued in this selection process. For this reason, it is suggested to contact the IIBM professors before sending the required documents.
(*) Due to the global pandemic, applications will be accepted without the language certificate. Candidates must demonstrate English language proficiency during the interview and the certificate will be requested afterwards. |
Graduation Requirements

Graduation from the Doctoral Program will require passing all curricular activities corresponding to the study plan and the final defense of the Thesis, according to the relevant article of the University’s Doctoral Student Regulations. In addition, research units and other mandatory non-credit activities that are a requirement for graduation must be completed. In addition to the above, students will receive international training through research internships abroad. |
